The Finca

The family-run Ses Talaioles has always been a mixed farming estate. Besides vines, the landscape is characterised by algarrobo and olive trees.

The history

A fortified tower
from the 15th Century

Cicadas chirp in the warm, sunlit evening that smells of orange and almond trees. The 400-year-old, elongated building leans against the majestic central manor house tower with its four corner battlements. The striking tower has overlooked the landscape near the small fishing port of Porto Cristo in Eastern Mallorca since the 15th Century.

Ses Talaioles owes its name to the prehistoric settlement remains of the so-called Talayotes that can still be found in its grounds.

These Balearic natives, fierce warriors who defended their settlements with slingshots, founded the Talayotic culture, which remains in part undiscovered. ‘Talayot’ derives from the Catalan ‘talaia’ and means ‘observation and watchtower’.

Sustainable Mixed Culture

Close-to-nature
agriculture
for more diversity

Ses Talaioles is to remain a traditionally managed, mixed farming estate. In addition to the wine, the products typical of Mallorca are still grown, the Mallorcan pigs “Porc Negre” are bred in the historic pig garden under old holm oaks, and a flock of sheep is used for organic fertilisation in the vineyard. At the same time, there is a focus on innovation, and the agricultural practices follow cutting-edge research.

Algarrobo

The protein-rich legume, also known as the carob pod, is becoming the new vegan superfood.

Porc Negre

The Mallorcan pig lives in the holm oak grove and is fed on farm products only.

Olives

The mediterranean stone fruits should not be missed on a finca. We use the olives to produce mild, cold-pressed olive oil.

Oranges

Various types of oranges and tangerines are processed into jams, chutney, ice cream, and cakes.

Honey

In addition to producing honey, bees make an indispensable contribution to the balance of nature.

Almonds

Mallorcan almonds have a unique taste. The ailing plantations are being restored.
The de Waal family

The aspiration to
build something lasting
and pass it on

Short-lived and rapid changes characterise our time. The opposite, namely durability and longevity, can be found at Ses Talaioles.

The goal of the owner family is to create something lasting. The emphasis on sustainable management lies at the core of this philosophy. We implement the latest findings on tillage, pruning, and biodiversity. State-of-the-art technology ensures climate-friendly and energy-efficient production processes.

Our focus is to:

  • ensure long-term quality. This means manual work and patience.
  • use natural resources carefully.
  • respect the given land: the wine should be a reflection of its origin.
  • involve the residents of the area and promote social responsibility.

Hendrik de Waal Finca Ses Talaioles
The wine

This land is
destined for
higher things”

Wine was already being cultivated on the slopes of Ses Talaioles in the 18th Century. The phylloxera plague in the 19th Century, however, led to the complete collapse of the formerly thriving Mallorcan wine industry.

In the year 2000, a German-Dutch family, the de Waals, breathed new life into this old tradition. The former vineyard, the sea-facing slopes of stony lime marl, and now a thinned carob plantation, offered a much higher potential - an ideal terroir for the cultivation of red wine grapes.

“There is farmer's blood flowing in my veins, and I immediately recognized that this sacred land was destined for more than the simple cultivation of carob and chickpeas”, recalls Nicola de Waal.
